One of the most important aspects to crossdressing is preparation, with a large percentage of that prep being devoted to makeup. However, if you have dark natural hair, there is always one feature that often causes issues - beard shadow.

I am very fortunate to be a red-head, which means that I don’t really get a dark shadow on my face, particularly as I am usually clean shaven. That said, I do know a lot of people who suffer from this particular problem. Therefore, in this article we are going to explore some tips to help with the preparation of your skin, as well as applying makeup to conceal and cover your beard shadow.

Preparing Your Skin

Before applying makeup onto the face, it’s important to properly prepare your skin. Whilst it may seem obvious, the first step is to shave the face. It’s best to wet shave all over, and If you have ingrown hairs, be sure to treat them. After you have shaved, ensure the area is completely dry, then apply a moisturiser that suits your skin type. If you want to avoid ingrown hairs, you should exfoliate often, and moisturise your face on a daily basis.

Before applying makeup, it's a good idea to apply a primer. This is used to allow the makeup to last longer, which is why it is important to do this before covering and concealing your beard shadow.

Apply Makeup to Cover Beard Shadow

Start with a colour corrector, which is used to correct the undertones of your skin. Wherever possible, use this as the first step before applying concealer, since one of the hardest parts about covering a beard shadow is trying to cover the shadow colour itself.

After the colour corrector, it’s time to apply concealer. Look for a medium coverage cream concealer in a shade that matches your skin tone. Apply a little bit of concealer at a time and blend well before adding more, as you want your beard shadow area to blend perfectly with the rest of your face.

You can use the same concealer as an all-over base, which some people find works well as an alternative to foundation. However, if you prefer to use foundation, it should be applied after the concealer.

Apply Powder to Help Set Your Makeup

To make sure your perfect base stays put, apply a face powder on top of the base. If you need extra coverage, use a foundation powder. For lighter coverage, you can always use a translucent powder.

Once completed, you can then continue with the rest of your facial makeup, thus allowing you to finalise your transformation of beauty!
