LGBT+ History Month

by Simon

LGBT+ History Month is an annual month-long observance of the history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. In the UK it is observed in February each year, and includes the celebration of gay rights, as well as an observation of the civil rights movement.

The observation of LGBT+ History Month is for everyone, and each year there is a different theme used by various businesses, services and organisations, helping them to celebrate diversity.

Background

Founded in Missouri USA in 1994, the celebration was adopted here in the UK in 2005. It has become an annual event held in February to coincide with the abolition of Section 28 in 2003 - removing laws that previously prevented the promotion of homosexuality.

Its creation provided a way for everyone to come together and represent a united movement for civil rights, as well as contributing to the promotion of the LGBTQ+ community. As well as the UK and USA, LGBT+ History Month is also observed in Australia, Canada, Cuba, Finland, Germany, Hungary and Italy, amongst others.

Why is LGBT+ History Month Important?

LGBT+ History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of LGBT people, as well as to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles and discrimination they face.

It is important because it helps to recognize the diversity and history of the LGBTQ+ community, and it provides an opportunity for people to come together and support one another. It also allows us to educate people, as well as inspiring people to work together for greater acceptance and equality.

In addition to recognising the LGBTQ+ community, it is vitally important that we raise awareness of the history surrounding LGBT people in order to inspire everyone to work towards creating an inclusive and equal world for all.

Difference Between LGBT+ History Month and Pride Month

LGBT+ History Month and Pride Month are two different observances that focus on the LGBTQ+ community. Whilst History Month celebrates the contributions of LGBT people, including the ongoing struggles and discrimination they face, Pride Month is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, culture and achievements.

Pride Month is generally marked by events and celebrations, including parades and festivals. The focus here is centred on diversity and strength in the LGBTQ+ community.

It is, of course, important to remember that whilst both have different focuses and traditions, both are equally prominent for recognising and supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
